Biguanides (Metformin)
Biguanides were banned in the United States during the 1970's because they were linked to lactic acidosis. A safer biguanide, metformin, has been released (brand name Glucophage) and the risk of lactic acidosis appears to be minimal. This drug works through decreasing the amount of glucose released from the liver. This drug may also aid in weight reduction and improvement of lipid profiles. (25,28-30)
